Depressed Moms in Violent Homes Twice as Likely to Hit Kids

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Mothers who are depressed and have violent arguments with their partner are more than twice as likely to physically punish their children than mothers with either factor alone, says a U.S. study.

The study, which included almost 13,000 mothers of kindergarten-aged children, found more than 10,000 of the women were neither depressed nor experienced violence in the home. About 1,700 were depressed, but reported no violence, and almost 500 did experience violence in the home, but weren’t depressed. Only 236 women in the study were depressed and exposed to violence at home.

The researchers found that one in four mothers who weren’t depressed nor exposed to violence said they disciplined their children by hitting them, compared with one in three of those who were depressed or exposed to violence, and one in two of those with both factors.

Compared to mothers without depression or violence in the home, mothers with depression were almost 60 percent more likely to smack their children, those with violent arguments with partners but no depression were almost 50 percent more likely to hit their children, and those with both factors were 250 percent more likely to strike their children.

These patterns were true irrespective of children’s behavior, said the study, which was published online ahead of print in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Previous research has suggested that physical punishment of children early in life may predispose them to behavioral problems as adults, noted the study authors, who added that corporal punishment remains a hotly debated topic, even among pediatricians.

What percentage water to washing up liquid an I mix for perfect bubbles? It would really cheer him up.

Here’s a site with different bubble recipes:

I like the second one, because I remember using sugar in my bubble mixtures when I was a kid, and it made a much stronger bubble.

Formulas and different ones

Did anybody have their newborn on Nutramagin and have any problems with that?

What about Parents Choice?

My daughter was on Alimentum (Similac version of Nutramagin) for almost 9 months…it was a god send for her. Both the Al. and Nut. are both hypoallergenic formulas…there are no generic or store brand formulas that are the same. This formula is usually given for cow milk PROTEIN sensitivity or allergy.

Is there any covers for those mini kid recliners?

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

my son got one of those mini kiddie recliners for christmas two years ago from his grandma. For some reason she got him one that is REALLY REALLY light color…like lighter than a light kaki. He’s only two and he is ruining it. is there anywhere that sells covers for them? i checked e-bay but cant find anything.

Haha I wish… My son got a light blue one for Christmas, and the second day he mashed banana into it… he was 17 months. When I tried to scrub it, the colour started coming out….He is now 2 and it looks AWFUL. All I can suggest is finding a fabric you like and tucking it and tacking it into place with staples. Thats my plan :)

How can I help my 3 year old daughter not be so constipated?

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

She is in such pain, and it’s been going on since she was born. She gets lots of fiber and water. The doctor says it’s not a big deal, but she is in serious pain. I don’t think he understands how bad it is. Any advice? This just breaks my heart to see her so pained!!

I had a similar experience with my oldest daughter (now 5). We tried all the variations of diet, no dairy, extra fiber, less fiber - because too much fiber can make them constipated too - prune juice, pear juice, raisins, grapes, no pasta etc. All of it worked for a little bit. My dd had constipation from a young age as well and our ped kept saying to take care of it with diet. Finally after watching my baby struggle and cry to poop when she was 2.5 I took her to another ped for a second opinion. She typically was having bm’s every 10-12 days. He immediately put her on prescription miralax and set her up for a few tests to see what was going on inside her “plumbing”.

My advise is to get a second opinion. I regret that I did not follow my extincts and get one sooner for my little girl.

grapes are a good idea..however it made not be a food issue. My friends daughter did not want to poop so she would hold it and make herself constipated..then it was just worse because it was painful, making her not want to poop even more.
She finally had to give her a laxative a few times to loosen her up and get her to relax a bit..she then got on a regular schedule and the constipation ceased.

should check for the food habit ,may need some changes see if she is drinking enough amount of water in a day , her food should not be dry , but veg with gravy , can apply Castor oil at anus .try to find out by communicating with her about her day 2 day needs , if she is happy ?wut is bothering her ? if ur working ? who looks after her ? keep a good communication with her . from that u can find some thing out . mentle stress can produce constipation
