EU’s new online library reopens after crashing
Monday, December 29th, 2008The European Union’s digital library, Europeana, which crashed on its opening day, is back in operation.
European Commission spokesman Martin Selmayr said the website was working after its server capacity had been quadrupled and it had been stress-tested to deal with user interest.
However, a message on the site www.europeana.eu reads, “the user experience may not be optimal in this test phase” and as a result “the number of users will be limited in peak times.”
The site was launched on November 21 to great fanfare but was swamped by an unexpected 10 million user hits per hour, swiftly bringing the system to a crashing halt, reports the BBC.
The Europeana project allows users to access films, paintings, photographs, sound recordings, maps, manuscripts, newspapers, and documents as well as books kept in European libraries.
Users will be able to find major literary works like Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, or masterpieces such as Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” or the manuscripts of composers including Beethoven.

Power of PowerPoint
Sunday, December 28th, 2008Whenever there is a seminar or a symposium we immediately think of PowerPoint presentations. Power point presentations are very commonly used nowadays for presentations and the software has its own advantages. We always feel pictures talk more than words. PowerPoint presentations allow people to depict their ideas in sequence of pictures displayed as slides. Power point presentation need not be always picture but can also contain the subjects in points which enable people to read it clearly than giving them in congested paragraphs. One more added merit is the animation feature of the PowerPoint presentations where we just need to set the timing after which the slides should change and it is done automatically. Also there are styles and fonts and templates available already based on the presentation and situation where you are going to present it. PowerPoint presentation makes the presentation job easier. Nowadays sophisticated multimedia facilities are available along with Power Point presentations to make life easier. You can add pictures and quotes from books and add it directly to the presentations and make it more informative instead of typing each and every word or drawing the picture all by yourself. You just need to add your creativity and ideas to make the presentations more lively and interactive.

Man wins case vs “human flesh search engine”
Friday, December 19th, 2008A man who lost his job and was harassed by strangers after his infidelity to his late wife was detailed online has won China’s first case against Internet vigilantism, the China Daily said on Friday.
A Beijing court ruled Wang Fei’s reputation had been damaged by his late wife’s university classmate, Zhang Leyi, who posted online the diary excerpts she wrote months before she killed herself, and by the internet company that hosted the comments.
“As Zhang was spreading the details of the affair, he also gave out details of Wang’s real name, name of his company and even family addresses, which infringed the plaintiff’s privacy rights,” the chief judge said.
Zhang was ordered to pay Wang 5,000 yuan ($730) and the Beijing Lingyun Interactive Information and Technology Co Ltd, was ordered to pay 3,000 yuan ($440).
He said he began the website that carried the diary narrating (Wang’s wife) Jiang’s misery after discovering her husband’s adultery two months earlier, to “commemorate Jiang’s death and help bring her justice.”
Internet users angered by the story mounted a cyber manhunt for the twenty-something Wang, mobilizing the phenomenon known in China as the “human flesh search engine.”
Wang was reportedly forced to resign, and had trouble finding another job, after strangers tracked him down and contacted the companies where he and his lover worked, the paper said.
Expletives were painted on his parents’ door, and his photos, addresses, and phone numbers were made public online.
China’s 290 million-odd Internet users have claimed the scalps of several government officials through such disclosures in recent years.
Last month, China’s transport ministry fired an official for manhandling an 11-year-old girl at a local restaurant, after Internet users posted images and his personal details online.
However the online mob’s harassment of more mundane characters involved in domestic disputes has left academics bemoaning China’s weak privacy laws.
What Your iPod Says About You
Thursday, December 18th, 2008If Apple and Steve Jobs have their way, Christmas will spark thoughts of Santa, reindeer–and brightly colored iPod nanos.
Apple recently rolled out brightly hued versions of the nano handsets, including a red iPod nano and iPod shuffle. Apple’s ads push the colorful little music players with the simple tag line “nano-chromatic.”

Apple was the first company to realize that gizmo players are as much about personal expression as they are about function. More recently, companies cranking out mobile phones have caught on, too. “Phones are becoming reflections of us as individuals and an important way to express our personalities,” says Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG.

It’s a sharp contrast to the drab shades most consumer electronics sported just a few years ago. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says tech companies, with the exception of forward-thinking Apple, largely ignored her color recommendations up through the ’90s. “They didn’t understand the impact of color–they felt it had nothing to do with their devices,” she recalls.
That’s changing. The color trend in cellphones ramped up in mid-2007. Consider the Samsung Juke, which Verizon released in October 2007 in red, aqua and royal blue. Phones like the sporty Juke, which appeal to younger consumers, are often first to get the color treatment. Nokia just announced two new colors–passionate purple and graphite–for its fashion-conscious Supernova line of phones in Europe.
Handsets that target older customers, such as pricey smart phones, are more likely to be offered in more conservative colors, says Sapna Tahliani, a device marketing manager for Verizon Wireless. That’s starting to change, though. Research In Motion’s BlackBerry, long considered the workhorse of smart phones, now comes in pink, red, amethyst, gold and–in the U.K.–a reddish orange shade called “sunset.”
That’s because our emotional reactions to color guide our shopping decisions, says Eiseman. That has handset manufacturers studying color psychology, investing in materials research and consulting color forecasts. “Our design group is completely hooked into what’s happening in fashion, autos and interior décor,” says Rabbani. New colors can hit stores within six months.
Of course, no one knows that better than Apple. It’s iPod nano now comes in nine colors. However, when it comes to adding color to mobile phones, Apple lags behind. While a myriad of colorful third party cases and covers are available, Apple’s phones still come with just a basic black, or white, back.
Apple isn’t the only phone maker going for a basic look. In a sign that neutrals aren’t totally passé, Rabbani says black is LG’s most “stable” color across all demographics. Among younger consumers, light blue is increasingly hot. “Blue is a safe color with appeal across gender and age groups,” he notes. “Light blue stands out; it’s the new pink.” LG relaunched the Chocolate, a sleek music player/phone, earlier this year in a pale blue.
Fittingly, blue is America’s favorite color, says Eiseman. “Consumer products often include blue in some form because a certain percentage of the population will always respond to it,” she adds.
Some colors, such as yellow and green, don’t resonate with consumers. “You won’t see a yellow phone from us soon,” says Rabbani. LG’s green enV phone, however, enjoyed surprising success despite testing poorly with focus groups. Rabbani says a promotional tie-in with a Shrek film probably helped.
Manufacturers that sell around the world customize their colors to local tastes. Americans prefer simple, unadorned colors, says Rabbani. Carriers also influence color options by requesting exclusive rights to particular shades.
Only certain handset models get a color dipping. Carriers are wary of slicing the market too thin. Occasionally, phones will sell better than expected and earn a “color refresh.” That was the case with the Chocolate, which was first offered in black in July 2006. By December 2007, it had expanded to six more colors, including white, “mint” and “cherry.”
The newest trend is to offer music players and handsets in several shades right away. “Sometimes you don’t get the full appeal of a phone if you only launch with one color,” explains Rabbani. When LG unveiled its Venus in November 2007, it carried black and hot-pink versions to target both men and women.
Gadget makers and carriers expect the color trend to keep growing. Over the next 10 years, as the inner workings of phones shrink and manufacturing costs drop, “You’ll be able to put a thicker texture of design around the phone,” says Christian Lindholm, director of Fjord, a London-based strategic design consultancy.
Says Eiseman, “Today, if you don’t do something that involves color, you’re seen as very backward or very boring.” Clearly, that’s a message few people want to send about themselves.

Crews struggle to restore power in ice-covered US northeast
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008Emergency crews struggled to restore power to hundreds of thousands of homes, after the northeastern United States was sheathed in ice by one of the most vicious winter storms on record.
Utility companies said it may take days to restore power after the ice storm entombed the region in a rock-hard glaze late Thursday, while frigid temperatures sent thousands fleeing to emergency shelters.
As many as 800,000 customers in the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont were without electricity, US media reported, and states of emergency were in effect across much of the region known as New England.
The storm initially left as many as 1.4 million people without power, energy officials said.
Officials across the region warned that could be more outages as drooping trees and branches shed ice and snap back into their original positions, potentially taking out more power lines.
Meanwhile, relief groups such as the Red Cross were seeking assistance outside New England, including from Canada.
“We are used to cold, and we are used to snow and ice, but this is a storm that is very unique,” Lisa Michaud, executive director of the Greater Manchester (New Hampshire) Red Cross, said on Fox.
“We received over an inch of ice on top of rain. It came hard and it came fast and we weren’t prepared for it.”
Authorities also said it may take several days to restore power throughout the region, because of the sheer number of outages and because of the extent of the devastation, which has made it harder to carry out needed repairs.
Still, authorities in some areas reported making steady progress. New Hampshire, for example, which reported as many as 322,000 customers without power as of late Friday, said that number had shrunk to about 194,000 by midday Sunday.
The company announced more than 120 additional crews from as far away as Maryland, Ohio, and Canada. In total, Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) said more than 500 line and tree crews were working Sunday to restore power.
President George W. Bush declared Massachusetts a disaster area late Saturday, unlocking federal aid to supplement local response efforts to the storm which first struck on Thursday with a vicious cold snap.
The Red Cross said it has opened 19 shelters across New Hampshire, Michaud said.
But even when the immediate emergency has been dealt with, officials said they anticipate longterm effects from the storm.
PSNH said there are a number of areas where the entire electric system must be rebuilt from the ground up and that many higher voltage power lines along main roads will require extensive rebuilding, as will lines damaged in the storm that connect smaller roads and individual homes.
