IOC “surprised” by Games web censorship

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

he media should have been told they would not have total Internet freedom before arriving for the Beijing Olympics, a senior IOC official said on Thursday, as rights groups piled criticism on both the IOC and host China.

As the row over censorship continued, International Olympic Committee (IOC) press chief Kevan Gosper told Reuters that both he and the international media had been taken by surprise that some politically sensitive websites had been blocked.

“It’s learning of it at almost the last minute that I think is destabilizing the international media and certainly embarrassing for me, as up till 48 hours ago I was insisting it would be free and uncensored Internet access,” Gosper said.

Gosper said the local organizers BOCOG’s failure to inform media beforehand that this would not happen was not good enough.

“We’ve noticed that the words being used by BOCOG have changed in recent months from ‘uncensored’ to what is more like ‘convenient and timely’, or ‘convenient and available’. These are quite different words,” he added.

“Nevertheless, no one has come out publicly and said on behalf of BOCOG or the IOC ’sorry, but there are certain Internet websites which are blocked’,” Gosper said. “I think they could have done better.”

BOCOG is responsible for directly running the Beijing Games under the auspices of the IOC, which sets general policy. The organizing committee of an Olympics would generally work hand-in-hand with the IOC.

Rights watchdog Amnesty International, whose website is among those barred in China, condemned Internet restrictions during the Games as “betraying the Olympic values.”

“This blatant media censorship adds one more broken promise that undermines the claim that the Games would help improve human rights in China,” Amnesty East Asia researcher Mark Allison said.

Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel and Nobel Peace Prize winner Bishop Desmond Tutu and other campaigners urged athletes to speak up on human rights in China during the Beijing Games.

“We are concerned that the Beijing Olympics might simply become a giant spectacle to distract the attention of the international public from the violations of human and civil rights in China,” stated the letter signed by 17 politicians and rights activists and issued in Prague.

BOCOG spokesman Sun Weide said censorship would not prevent journalists from reporting the Games, though he acknowledged there would be no access to some websites. BOCOG consistently assured journalists ahead of the Games that they would have normal access to the Internet.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said his government stood by Olympics reporting rules promising to ease restrictions on foreign journalists.

“Our determination to enforce these regulations is staunch,” spokesman Liu Jianchao told a regular news conference. “As for how the International Olympic Committee understands these regulations, that’s its own affair.”

CEREMONY REHEARSAL

organizers also became involved in another media spat, over a South Korean television station’s broadcast of a dress rehearsal for the Olympics opening ceremony, traditionally kept under wraps by Games organizers, that has infuriated Chinese Internet users.

But the network said on Thursday it had taken the footage legitimately.

The broadcast is certain to irk Games organizers who had made performers sign confidentiality agreements not to divulge details of the August 8 ceremony, directed by Oscar-nominated director Zhang Yimou.

“We went, and nobody stopped us. So we just shot,” a staff reporter at the private SBS network sports desk said in Seoul.

The network, one of three official rights holders for the Games from South Korea, aired just over a minute of video of next week’s ceremony rehearsal, including the unrolling of a huge scroll from which rises a carpet-like object.

SBS did not show the lighting of the Olympic torch at the National Stadium where the rehearsal was taking place, but it reported that a golden phoenix was expected to swoop down into the stadium, dubbed the Bird’s Nest, for the climactic event.

Sun said he was “disappointed” by SBS’s move. Chinese Internet users accused the channel of effectively breaking state secrecy laws by showing the footage.

HAZY SKIES

Worries over pollution remained too.

China has announced a slew of emergency measures in and around Beijing in case air pollution remains poor during the Olympics, including taking more cars off the roads and slashing production at more than 220 factories.

The radical plan would be carried out if air quality was forecast to be short of acceptable standards for the upcoming 48 hours due to “extremely unfavorable weather conditions,” the Ministry of Environmental Protection said.

A sultry haze has shrouded Beijing for much of the last week but officials have sought to ease worries, blaming it on an unusually long bout of hot, humid weather they said was unlikely to be repeated during the Games.

The government has already cleared about half the capital’s 3.3 million cars from its streets — by restricting vehicles with odd or even license plate numbers on alternate days — and shut factories dozens of miles away.

Is believing in MURPHY’S LAW better, worse or the same as being SUPERSTITIOUS?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

In my opinion, it is much better. Murphy’s law (everything that can go wrong, will go wrong) is much more rational, and is much like the boy scout motto (be prepared). It is much better to be prepared to deal with and solve real problems, or problems that are more likely to arise in the future, that to think silly things such as black cats and spilling salt cause bad luck. Superstitions are generally regarded as frivolous and unnecessary, however being prepared is just good character.

———

There is really only one law you should look for and that is “The Law of Attraction” This law governs everything that you experience in life, the good, the bad and the indifferent. What you think about and focus your attention on, you will attract to you sooner or later. There really is no such thing as Murphy’s Law, Sods Law or any other superstitious law.

Why does the chicken from chinese restaurants not look the chicken I use in my kitchen?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

It just doesn’t seem to pull apart like chicken and always seems to have a fatty layer around it under the sauces. It really grosses me out. My husband loves chinese but the chicken dishes gross me out by the way they look. Why does it look different?

To prepare the chicken for stir-fries, they boil the chunks of chicken with baking soda, which softens it and significantly changes the texture. The same process is done for beef which is why the beef in beef and broccoli tastes so rubbery.

——

it is chicken it is just that chinese usually dip it in a coating before cooking , i cooked all my life and have worked with a chinese cook , the only thing you need to worry about is the majarity of chinese cooks do not have the same hygiene and sometimes do things that you would not do. and no i am not saying all chinese are dirty or anything like that they just are trained very differant in cooking

Why does the right side of my stomach hurt?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The right side of my stomach hurts. I mean from the inside.
It’s not exercise cramps.
It’s not because I’m hungry.
It’s been happening rarely since the beginning of summer, but
now I’ve had this pain every day for 4 days.

I looked at some questions of this kind at yahoo and some people said it could be my appendix. Others say it’s probably a gas problem.

If the pain is just under the rib cage on the right side, it most likely is your gallbladder. Bad bile made in your liver from eating bad fats like Vegetable oils (canola, soybean, cottonseed, and corn oils) and fried foods, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, etc. all contribute to very bad bile. The liver makes this and then sends it to the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a storage tank for bile. If the bile is viscous from these bad oils, it will crystalize and form stones. When you eat any fatty foods, the gallbladder squeezes and the bile flows down the bile duct to digest the fats. If stones are present, the bile has a hard time getting down that duct. This causes pain.

The most active time the bile is made is between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the day time. If you are on a LOW fat diet, this diet exacerbates the problem and makes it definitely worse. These very stupid people that recommend low fat this and low fat that have no understanding of how the body works. It’s very important to understand fats and how they play a very important part in regard to your health.

If you were having a gas problem, that still relates to your digestion. Don’t let some surgeon convince you that you need your gallbladder out until you understand completely the whole process and how you can make yourself healthy with a diet change first. 99% of all gallbladder operations could be avoided if good nutrition was applied.

…………….

If you mean the right side of your whole gut area, then it is your appendix, or liver..(or even gall bladder, or diverticulitis, other possibilites)and…the stomach is on the left side of your gut area………IF..severe pain, lower right, could be the appendix, and if it bursts, you can die,,,,,time for a doctor,,,even if it’s the liver, a duller pain,,,hepatitis is a possibility, and very dangerous,,,,,,TIME for the doctor!

…………

It could be your appendix or an infection. Both hurt really bad, and if it gets worse, then you should go to the hospital or see a doctor right away. If it’s your appendix, you should get an operation to remove it because if you just ignore it, then it bursts, which would cause horrible pain. Even if its just an infection, you should take care of it before it spreads.

……..

Your appendix will have sharp pain in the lower right side region of your stomach and the only way to find out if it’s that is to have the doctor check your white blood cell count to see if it’s low. If not then it may very well be intestinal conjestion. Just consult your primary care physician.

……..

There is a chance it could be appendicitis especially if you have nausea along with the pain. It could also be your gall bladder. You should see a doctor because either of these can be serious. If it is your appendix and you wait to take care of it, you could get very ill. Go see the doctor.

What is a capping inversion?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

No wikipedia entires please.

A capping inversion is when the temperature in a layer of air above the surface increases. This has the effect of stopping air from below from rising through the inversion, thus “capping” the atmosphere there. Now if the air below the inversion warms enough, it can overcome the inversion and in some cases lead to quick thunderstorm formation.

——–

A capping inversion is seen as an increase in temperature most often occurring in the low levels of the atmosphere, though it can be found in the mid and high levels too, but are less rare the higher you get. Its normally associated with high pressure. High pressure circulates in an anticyclonic manner(clockwise when looking at the surface of the earth from space) and just like when you screw the cap on a soda bottle it screws in a downward direction, the same occurs with high pressure as it spins. This is called subsidence, this is your cap, it presses down on the atmosphere below it preventing anything below from rising above it, unless the temperature of the atmosphere below reaches the same as the inversion then it will likely push right through and in the case of a thunderstorm it will allow for development of a thunderstorm cell.

What’s your opinion on tablet notebooks?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

i’m starting grad school and needed a laptop. i was originally going to go with sony viao but a friend suggested that i look into a tablet notebook instead. while it’s not required, she suggested it b/c it would help me take notes (esp. in lab) directly w/o studying off the black & white bad quality handouts they give you in class. The other obvious alternative is just to print the handouts in color myself and bring it to class instead of buying a tablet notebook.

I don’t know anyone with a tablet notebook, so I wanted to know if you have one, how you like it? WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE? How long have you had it for? What problems have you had with it? Is it reliable? What brand & series would you recommend?

You could try HP. I have three of their tablet notebooks and they are all fine. It’s reliable and hasn’t caused me any troubles at all.

Here’s a problem:?

A hydrocarbon contains 85.7% C and the rest H. If the
molecular weight of the 42.06 g/mol, determine its molecular
formula.

Use these masses: C = 12.01 g/mol, H = 1.01 g/mol
I think the compound is propane.

Almost right…correct answer is cyclopropane or propene

You obv figured out that the C:H ratio is 1:2, giving an empirical formula of (CH2)…three of these gives MW of 42. But the only way that can occur is if all three C’s are linked in a cyclic compound (cyclopropane) or if unsaturation is present (propene).

Added later: A simple bromine test would distinguish between these…Br adds across propene’s double bond.

Should I be jealous?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

My Grandma has been dating a guy for about 4 years. I found out about a year ago. At first it was kinda weird but I have gotten used to it. Me and my grandma are really close and I go out to eat with her every Tuesday. Her boyfriend has a kid that is 6. I liked her at first but now she is turning into a brat. Now every Tuesday she comes with us and my grandma doesn’t even ask if I want her too. My Grandma buys her stuff and never really gets me anything. She also brags about her all the time and when shes around her they ignore me. I’m getting really sick of it and I don’t know what to do. Should I stop going with my grandma or just ignore it?

You shouldn’t stop going to your grandma’s house just because of that!
Because
1. that would be very immature.
2. just because she buys that little brat things, doesn’t mean she loves her more than you!

That’s why you feel bad, because you are taking it the wrong way..
I mean, it’s normal to feel the way you do, we have ALL been through something like this.

You grandma probably is in love with this guy, and his daughter comez with him, you know what im sayin?

You never know, your grandma most likely thinks that little girl is a brat too, but she HAS to comprimisee..

I think you should try your best to get along with that girl, tell your grandma that she is kind of annoying & you feeel ignored everytime she is around.
Another thing you might wanna say is that you miss spending time with her [your grandma]

Girl, it’s not wrong to be jealous!
But this is something you can’t really change.. unless you go with it!

………………..

You need to tell your grandma how you feel in a understanding and clear way. Your grandma might not notice the way she is making you feel and if she did, most likely she’ll stop. If she doesn’t stop, but knows the problem and understands it, then maybe you should take a break from visiting your grandma… but don’t cut it off completely. This isn’t something you want to break off with someone like that. Obviously this kid means a lot to your grandma, so you should try respecting that.

………………

Tell your grandmother you are upset with how you’ve been treated and ignored lately. Tell her this isn’t a joke an dyou aren’t overreating or being too sensitive but that she is insensitive to your feelings. Don’t go with her for a few weeks then and tell her you will try once more but if it is still bad you won’t ever again.

Individual vision coverage?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

my insurance doesn’t cover vision, does anyone know of a good plan?

A good plan is to walk into one of the stores in a mall and negotiate. Insurance may save 25-35% off their regular costs. But you can negotiate 50-60% off. Vision coverage is kind of a joke….

…consider the source being someone who sells insurance. If you really, really want it you can usually piggy back it on a health or dental plan.

oh and I use 1800contacts for contacts….much cheaper than through the doc…
